Handsome book. This book does not discuss wall paper symmetry groups. It is more a compass and ruler approach. Very handsomely laid out, with photos of historical sources. On the web, java script, symmetry graphics, maybe found for free, search: Escher Sketch. Using this software without compass, ruler, or paper one can see patterns unfold quickly. But they will be low resolution and imprecise. Using Adobe illustrator more precise work covering many tiles may be quickly laid out. There is some info on this on the net, but no book available at this time on practical islamic design with computer. If you want to go hands on with pencil and paper, then graph paper both, squares and isometric may be useful. This book stays within the limits of Islamic design, as per it's title and does not explore either tessellations per-se, or Escher type permutations - for that material see these books: "M.C. Escher: Visions of Symmetry" by Doris Schattschneider ,Introduction to Tessellations Paperback – 1990 by Dale Seymour, Jill BrittonDesigning Tessellations 1999 by Jinny BeyerArabic Geometrical Pattern and Design by J. Bourgoin , for B&W line art onlyEric's book is special for having color photographs of the both originals tiles and architecture where one may no longer want to visit, as well as the compass and ruler construction methods that go with the design in question. I have focused on the geometry, and not repeated the other reviewers, but I agree with them that it is a wonderful book. It is huge.
This book is amazing. I have had it for a couple weeks and find it hard to put down. It will appeal to anyone who loves Islamic art: the photographs are outstanding and it could be displayed on any coffee table with pride. Yet, for the artist and designer, it is a treasure trove of images and ideas. Broug meticulously analyzes every design, and there are instructions in the back of the book that show you how to recreate many of them.I could also see this book (as well as Broug's "Islamic Geometric Patterns") being used by teachers: art teachers who want to introduce their students to Islamic design and math teachers who wish to bring geometry to life.
Beautifully produced book. I found the step by step instructions to reproduce the patterns extremely practical. Inclusion of the historical context makes this book an absolute joy to read. Reintroduces the unparalleled aesthetic beauty of traditional Islamic design to our contemporary world.
Eric Broug improves on his second work on the subject of Islamic Art.There are not many resources on this subject and you would do well with this one. It is beautifully bound, on display in my home in fact. The pictures inside do something I have never seen done: they show an image as an example of Islamic Art and then disect it for the artist informing them how it is done.Illuminating and important insight into this fading artform.
Absolutely fantastic. I've been looking for a book like this for a long time. Beautiful. Clear explanations. And directions for creating many of the designs. If you have any interest in Islamic art, this is the book.
I am a math teacher and have recently become interested in the geometry underlying the Islamic tile patterns in mosques and other buildings. I originally took this book out of my school library, but loved its beauty so much that I had to buy it for myself.
You will not find a finer explanation of the intersection of math and aesthetics in Islamic art. Exquisite book. If I only had one book on Islamic art and architecture, this would be it.
Anyone interested in geometric drawing or patterns or architecture would enjoy this book. Architectural pictures of buildings in the Islamic world are clear, close and concise. The book even shows you how to draw the featured geometric patterns.
